This is an example of a typical basnig (a local commercial fishing vessel) that is violating the most basic provision in the Fisheries Code of the Philippines. Essentially, a commercial fishing vessel, like a basnig, is required by law to catch fish outside Municipal Waters or beyond 15 kilometers from shore–NOT within the 15 kilometer zone of Municipal Waters. This video illustrates a basnig fishing at 2.4 kilometers from shore beside the Mangal Marine Protected Area in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro. It was identified as MV Paolo from Occidental Mindoro. This was filmed using a Parrot Bebop 2 drone with FPV goggles. It was able to reach a distance of 2.4 kilometers from the remote control (onshore) with an unimpeded line of sight. The video was submitted to the local police authorities (Philippine National Police) for evidence.
